The Volkswagen Cabrio design was based on two vehicles - the front-drive Golf hatchback and the Jetta sedan. Equipped with a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine packing strength of 115-horsepower, it has a 5-speed manual and an optional 4-speed automatic transmission. For passenger safety, it comes along with dual airbags and antilock brakes.
The roof can be opened hydraulically or manually without difficulty. The 1996 entry came with daytime running lights and new dashboard switch for the central locking system that can unlock or lock both doors and trunk.
For 97, two versions went on sale, the value leader base model and a posh, lavishly-equipped highline. The 98 model replaces the highline with the GLS plus a standard convertible top. In 1999, Cabrio was mildly revised with new front and rear fascias and redesigned dashboards. Added in 2000 was an in-dash CD player and a dashboard light now illuminated when the brakes need servicing. 2001 marks the introduction of the GLX with power top, leather seats, and alloy wheels. For 02, the GLX and the GLS came with heated front seats and an of/off switch for the self dimming rearview mirror. In 2006, the new VW Cabrio rolled down from its assembly plant completely different from its predecessor. The look became sportier and the engine was more powerful compared with the previous Cabrio, a 3.6 liter VR6 at 280hp.
