The Volvo 960 was manufactured to replace the 760. It was introduced in 1991 as an evolutionary progression of the 1990 760. To make it different, the 960 was installed with an all-new aluminum 24-valve DOHC inline six-cylinder engine.

Other 960s, especially those marketed in Australia, were equipped with a V6 engine. For further improvement, it was loaded with new shapely seats and redesigned seat belts with hydraulic pretensioners.

In 1993, the ergonomic shifter was introduced. Dual front air bags were added in the 1994 models. And for more appeal, radical changes were done in 1995 such as the aerodynamic front end and more body-colored panels. The front suspension was also retooled so that it can use the same wheels with that of the newer front-wheel drive Volvo models. Even the rear suspension was completely redesigned from coil spring to fiberglass leaf spring, known as the independent rear suspension. The production of this model ended in 1998, and it was renamed as the Volvo S90/Volvo V90. The US-marketed model was equipped with an automatic transmission.
